Judaism's Legacy In the African Bush
August 4-9, 2026
Bulawayo → Harare → Victoria Falls
$2,500 (excl. international flights, lunch/dinner, & visas)
Zimbabwe’s Jewish community is at a historic crossroads. After outlasting revolutions, independence, and total economic collapse, the population has dwindled from several thousand to its final ~80 members. This is a rare invitation to witness a legacy so deeply woven into the local soil that the neighbors have stepped in to keep the rituals alive. It is a story of deep respect and shared history — one that is reaching its most intimate, final-hour chapter.
Select Zimbabwe Highlights
Bulawayo: You will walk through a city whose civic identity Jews literally built — from its first hospitals to its earliest municipal foundations. The first white baby born here was Jewish and the first white man hanged was also Jewish. We'll meet some of the final 32 remaining residents.
Harare: In the capital, you will meet the last 52 Jews who have traded a century of sectarian pride for a pragmatic union where Ashkenazi and Sephardic (Rhodesli) descendants rotate between synagogues every other Shabbat just to scrape together a minyan. The goal is no longer theological "purity," but simply showing up so the lights stay on in sanctuaries that once anchored a thriving diaspora.
Sharon and Carmel schools: Although almost no Jewish students remain, hundreds of non-Jewish students and their families continue to observe Jewish holidays and hold weekly Shabbat assemblies. You will see firsthand how the local majority is fiercely protecting the schools' Jewish identity —preserving a standard of tradition and excellence they refuse to let vanish along with the population.
